The seat on the San Bernardino City Unified school board previously held by longtime community leader Margaret Hill will be up for grabs in the November election.
Three other seats on the seven-member school board will be on the ballot, as well.
Hill, who served 10 years on the dais, died in December at the age of 81.
Her seat has been vacant since.
With two years remaining on Hill’s term, district leaders could have appointed someone to the post last month after interviewing more than a dozen applicants during a marathon special meeting.
But the six trustees could not agree on a candidate.
Because the board did not make an appointment by a set deadline, the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools decided to move the vacant seat to the November election, said Melissa Eickman, a spokeswoman for the county Registrar of Voters.
There are no special costs associated with the move, an SBCUSD spokeswoman said.
Registered voters residing within district boundaries are eligible to run.
Candidate filing begins Monday, July 18, and continues through 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12.
Those running to fill Hill’s post will be specified on the ballot, and the winner will serve through 2024.
School board seats presently occupied by Danny Tillman, Barbara Flores and Abigail Rosales-Medina also will appear on the November ballot.
