Truck burglarized, roadway set on fire during San Bernardino street takeover – San Bernardino Sun

Spectators at a street takeover in San Bernardino attempted to remove the driver out of a truck that tried to make its way through the intersection, stole items from the truck and set the roadway on fire, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place at the intersection of 5th Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue around 11:38 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, said Sgt. Thomas Equino, spokesman for the San Bernardino Police Department. Police received calls regarding cars doing donuts in the intersection with many spectators in the street, Thomas said.

As a truck attempted to proceed through the intersection, some spectators tried to remove the driver and unspecified items were taken from the truck’s container, Thomas said. The truck driver was hauling furniture at the time of the incident, Fox 11 Los Angeles reported.

A person in attendance was also lighting the roadway on fire in an attempt to give the cars doing donuts “more traction,” Thomas said.

The group dispersed when police arrived, but there were four similar calls throughout the city the remainder of the evening after the initial gathering was broken up, according to Thomas.

“We have seen an increase in this type of activity and the police department is looking at ways to combat it,” Thomas said.
