A man who allegedly fled the scene of a March hit-and-run that took the life of a 59-year-old man in San Bernardino has been arrested, police announced Wednesday, July 13.
Matthew Eugene Mason, 29, of San Bernardino was located in Riverside and arrested in connection with the March 8 fatal hit-and-run on South Pepper Avenue that took the life of Martin Villegas of San Bernardino, police said. Mason was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, hit-and-run with death or injury and various firearm charges, according to San Bernardino County jail logs.
On March 8, Mason was driving a Dodge Challenger north on South Pepper Avenue at speeds over 100 mph when he ran a red light at Mill Street and rear-ended Villegas’ car, killing Villegas instantly, police said. Mason fled the crash scene on foot and left behind an illegally possessed unregistered firearm, authorities said.
DNA evidence was found and Mason was determined to be the driver of the Dodge, police said. However, police made several unsuccessful attempts at finding Mason and determined that he went into hiding.
It was later learned that Mason had various felony warrants for his arrest out, with one dating as far back as 2016.
On Monday, July 11, Mason was found at 6:53 p.m. in the 9000 block of County Farm Road in Riverside, jail logs indicated.
