‘Southern California in Film’ series will continue at Redlands’ Contemporary Club – San Bernardino Sun

The A.K. Smiley Public Library’s “Southern California in Film” series is returning for 2023 with a new selection of films featuring Southern California.

This year’s series begins 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, with a screening of the unrated 1963 film “Palm Springs Weekend” at the Contemporary Club, 173 S. Eureka St., Redlands. Admission is free.

The series continues every month except July and August and will include award winners, cult classics and commercial successes that range from histories and biopics to comedies and musicals.

“With so many films that tell the story of this region or feature it prominently, this series really allows a wide variety of topics to be explored,” Maria Carrillo, special collections manager at the A.K. Smiley Public Library, said in a news release. “We’re grateful for the generous contributions of the library’s donors that allow this series to be made available for free.”

Other films scheduled for 2023 are “Love & Basketball” (2000, rated PG), Feb. 18; “The Rocketeer” (1991, PG), March 18; “Clueless” (1995, PG-13), April 15; “Beach Party” (1963, not rated), May 13; “Zoot Suit” (1981, R), June 17; “Double Indemnity” (1944, not rated), Sept. 16; “Ed Wood” (1994, R), Oct. 21; “Chinatown” (1974, R), Nov., 18; and “La La Land” (2016, PG-13), Dec. 16.

All screenings will be at 2 p.m. at the Contemporary Club. Not all films are suitable for all audiences, and the schedule is subject to change.
