Tom Atchley will present “Before and After Photos of Redlands Homes,” showing houses that have changed over the years, when the Redlands Area Historical Society meets 7 p.m. Monday, March 28, at the Contemporary Club, 173 S. Eureka St., Redlands.
Atchley, who is president of the Historical Society, taught in the social studies department at Cope Junior High School (now Cope Middle School) beginning in 1973 and later at Redlands High School, retiring in 2011.
His interest in Redlands history began when he was a senior at the University of Redlands and read the 1887-88 issues of Redlands’ Citrograph newspaper, getting hooked on the history the paper revealed, according to a news release. .
After he and his friend Howard Eden indexed the newspaper with thousands of index cards, he read the Redlands Daily Facts from 1890 to the 1950s, then all the local papers Redlands has produced over theyears, found in the A.K. Smiley Public Library’s Heritage Room.
Nearly 50 years ago, Atchley teamed up with Larry Burgess to teach classes on the history of Redlands and the surrounding area. Those classes led him to create slide shows to illustrate various aspects of local history.
One of those slide shows consists of Redlands houses and how they have changed over the years, and that is the program Atchley will present for the Historical Society.
Redlands began at the end of the Victorian era, and some Redlands houses have changed as different architectural styles became popular. The program will reveal many Victorian houses that have been disguised by later renovations.
The program is free and open to the public and it will also be available on Zoom.
