See bonsai demonstration at Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society meeting – San Bernardino Sun

John Nielsen, a certified arborist from Redlands, will present a program on raising bonsai when the Redlands Horticultural and Improvement Society meets 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Redlands Church of the Nazarene, 1307 E. Citrus Ave.

Nielsen’s presentation will include a hands-on demonstration on creating a bonsai tree, from planting to fertilizing and watering, according to a news release.

Nielsen’s interest in bonsai, the art of growing miniature trees in containers, goes back to 1985 and he has  studied under bonsai masters including John Naka, Harry Hirao and Tak Shimazu, according to the news release.

He has taught classes on bonsai culture and techniques in Southern California for many years and he has exhibited at the Huntington Library. One of his favorite bonsai forms is the forest, and he enjoys creating trees in the informal upright style.

Working under the direction of Tak Shimazu, Nielsen has had the opportunity to maintain privately owned bonsai collections featuring very old trees.
