Sandra Ibarra takes lead in San Bernardino council race – San Bernardino Sun

Early election results had her trailing but San Bernardino Councilwoman Sandra Ibarra on Thursday, June 9, edged past her challenger in the Second Ward.

According to the latest unofficial election results released by the San Bernardino County of Registrar of Voters at 4 p.m. Thursday, Ibarra had captured 49.65% of the vote, compared to challenger Terry Elliott’s 49.31%. Just three votes separated the first-term councilwoman and her challenger.

The registrar reported Thursday it had more than 109,000 ballots countywide that had yet to be counted. The next round of updated results from Tuesday’s primary election is due at 4 p.m. Friday, June 10.

In order to win the Second Ward seat and avoid a November runoff, Ibarra or Elliott would need 50% of the vote, plus one vote.

Elsewhere on the ballot, Helen Tran maintained her lead in the mayoral race. She had 40.88% of the vote, according to updated results, leading Jim Penman with 20.8% and incumbent Mayor John Valdivia with 18.18%. Should results hold, Tran and Penman would face one another in a runoff this November.

In the First and Fourth wards, Councilmen Theodore Sanchez and Fred Shorett, respectively, held comfortable leads and appeared to be headed toward re-election. Each had more than 55% of the vote in their respective wards, updated election results showed.
