Redlands’ A.K. Smiley Public Library will present a talk and book signing by Riverside author Susan Straight 6:30 p.m. March 24 at the Contemporary Club, 173 S. Eureka St., Redlands.
The library, in collaboration with the Frugal Frigate bookstore, Friends of the A.K. Smiley Public Library and American Association of University Women, is sponsoring a community read of Straight’s family memoir, “In the Country of Women,” culminating in the March 24 event.
The book, a memoir of Straight’s extended family, is a story spanning multiple continents and generations. In the book, Straight honors the sacrifices, love, pain and hardships of the women in her family who found their way to the Inland Empire.
Straight, who was born in Riverside, has been writing about Southern California and the inland area for 40 years.
In addition to “In the Country of Women,” she has published eight novels and two books for children. Her short stories and essays have appeared in publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, McSweeney’s, Zoetrope, Reader’s Digest and Family Circle, according to a news release.
She has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lannan Prize for Fiction, a California Gold Medal for Fiction and the Kirsch Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes.
Copies of “In the Country of Women” are available to borrow at the A.K. Smiley Public Library, and the Frugal Frigate bookstore will have copies available for purchase at the March 24 event.
The event is free. Those who are not vaccinated are asked to wear face masks.
