Redlands Footlighters will stage ‘Little Women’ – San Bernardino Sun

The Redlands Footlighters will present “Little Women,” Kate Hamill’s stage adaptation of the novel by Louisa May Alcott, opening 8 p.m. Dec. 2 and running weekends through Dec. 18 at the Footlighters Theatre, 1810 Barton Road.

The novel, published in 1868 shortly after the U.S. Civil War, tells the story of the story of the March family as the four daughters learn to live and love in a rapidly changing world.

Jody Duncan, who directs the Footlighters’ production, said in a news release that she appreciates the fresh tone of Kate Hamill’s stage adaptation of the novel, providing a modern flavor and allowing her to be “a little creative and free-wheeling with the production, rather than having to strictly adhere to era-appropriate elements.” Updated touches include modern music and innovative staging that allows the story to flow from scene to scene.

“The cast has worked so hard on this show,” Duncan said in the news release. “Two of the actors, in particular, are playing multiple roles with different dialects and body languages. The fiery Jo March, played by Veronique Poutré, is in nearly every scene, as is Brooklyn Miller playing Beth, the conscience of the March family. Both have done a wonderful job bringing these beloved characters to life.”

Others in the cast include Alicia Lombardo as Meg, Brooklyn Eilenfield as Amy, Vicki Broach as Marmee and Eddie Barajas as Laurie.

Ainsley Carnes, granddaughter of director Jody Duncan, makes her theatrical debut as the puppeteer of Aunt March’s parrot.

Performances are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 18, plus a Saturday matinee Dec. 17.

Tickets are $18 for general admission, $12 for students and $15 each for groups of 10 or more, available at redlandsfootlighters.org.

The Footlighters are also holding a holiday toy drive. Those who bring a new, unwrapped toy will receive $3 worth of concessions. The toys will go to local nonprofits for distribution during the holidays.
