Rancho Cucamonga holiday lights display ready to wow crowds – San Bernardino Sun

Residents on Thoroughbred Street began setting up their popular light displays over Thanksgiving weekend in anticipation of the Christmas season.

The Thoroughbred Holiday Lights display will be open 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Dec. 2-24 for drive-thru access only.

The light display is a popular tradition in the Alta Loma neighborhood and attracts an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 vehicles throughout the holiday season.

Thoroughbred Street residents install creative and intense displays with various themes — from Disney characters to Santa Claus in a candy-themed blow up airplane.

“I guess people put up lights to celebrate Christmas and to share with others,” said Thoroughbred resident Brent Stoddard, 51. The show helps “spread good cheers,” Stoddard said, “and they think it’s fun and I like to interact with the other families that come down the street.”

Stoddard and his family have lived on Thoroughbred for just over six years. The Stoddards build and modify many of their decorations to fit their needs, such as rigging icicle lights to flick on and off to match the music that’s playing.

“Each house picks their own theme and how much they want to decorate, how little, how detailed, and how many lights they want to put up,” said Stoddard, adding that there’s help available to those who need it when setting up their displays.

The Rancho Cucamonga City Council earlier this year approved a resolution to continue “drive-thru only” access, as it has for the past several years to help manage crowds and improve access for public safety personnel.
