Opening delayed for Cheech Marin art museum in Riverside – San Bernardino Sun

The grand opening of the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture of the Riverside Art Museum has been delayed until June.

The museum, originally set to open May 8 in the remodeled downtown Riverside library, will now open Saturday, June 18.

The delay is due to “supply chain issues, contractor-related staffing shortages due to COVID-19, and unforeseen construction setbacks that come with renovating a historical building,” a Tuesday, Feb. 8, news release from the Riverside Art Museum states.

“While unfortunate, a path forward has been established on how outstanding items will be resolved in a timely and safe manner,” the release states.

In the release, Chicano art collector and comedian Cheech Marin told guests: “Don’t despair.”

“We want everything to be just right so we can welcome the world in celebrating Chicano art and culture at The Cheech,” Marin said.

A dedication for “The Cheech” will take place at the museum Thursday, June 16, the release states. An opening gala is set for Friday, June 17, at the Riverside Convention Center.
