A public celebration of the life of San Bernardino County Assessor-Recorder Bob Dutton will be held Aug. 19, his family has announced.
Dutton, a former state senator and Rancho Cucamonga City Council member, died July 23 at age 71 after a battle with cancer.
Services for Dutton will begin with a 10 a.m. rosary and 11 a.m. funeral Mass on Friday, Aug. 19, at St. Peter and St. Paul Church, 9135 Banyan St., Rancho Cucamonga. After the services, a Celebration of Life will be held 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Ontario Airport, 222 N. Vineyard Ave., Ontario. All events are open to the public.
In an obituary, Dutton’s family recalled the Nebraska native’s love for Cornhuskers football games, movies and buttered popcorn, skiing and dancing, and the impact he had on young fast-pitch softball players.
“He mentored dozens of players who later received scholarships to attend colleges,” the obituary notes. “One of his mentees once wrote to him ‘Thanks for always being there, I think of you as an extra dad with all the extra love and support you give me and the others.’ “
In the political realm, Dutton was admired as an advocate for taxpayers and was especially focused on the well-being of Rancho Cucamonga, where he earned the nickname “RC Bob.”
After he was elected assessor-recorder, Dutton used his new office to share the history and legacy of San Bernardino County, the largest geographical county in the United States, in weekly videos.
According to his obituary, Dutton is survived by his wife, Andrea, and daughter, Kara (Cansu); parents Ted and Jo Dutton in Texas; siblings Bill (Judy) Dutton, Jeanne (Steve) Matthes, and Tom (Jan) Nickles in Nebraska; stepbrothers Brooks (Sharon) Aldrich in Texas, Brendan (Mary) Aldrich in Indiana, and Mark (Amy) Aldrich in California; sisters-in-law Antoinette (Randy) Gonzales and Annette (Danny) Bauman in California, and Annamarie (Guillen) Huser in Arkansas; brother-in-law John Guillen in California and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
