Man in Rialto loses thumb, suffers other injuries, after trying to launch illegal fireworks – San Bernardino Sun

A man lost a thumb and suffered injuries to his stomach, upper chest and face when he mishandled an illegal mortar firework on July 4 in Rialto, police said.

The 48-year-old man tried to launch the firework, the tube fell and ended up pointing at him, Rialto police Sgt. Richard Royce said.

The explosion occurred on the 3000 block of North Amberwood Avenue just before 9 p.m., he said. The man was taken to a hospital. Royce described the man’s injuries as non-life threatening.
