A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of carjacking an 81-year-old woman who was providing meals to the homeless at a Redlands grocery store, authorities said.
Police found him in the driver’s seat of the 2015 silver Kia Sportage with the keys in his possession at a parking structure in the 500 block of East 11th Street in Los Angeles, a news release from the Redlands Police Department said.
LAPD arrested the man and handed him over to Redlands police for further investigation. The man was taken to West Valley Detention Center in San Bernardino, where he was booked for carjacking and elder abuse.
Police released surveillance footage of the incident.
A man is seen walking up to the woman’s car in a Stater Bros. parking lot as her trunk is open and forcefully takes the keys from her, police said. As the man gets into the driver’s seat and begins to drive away, the elderly woman keeps her hand on the door handle and attempts to stop him, but is knocked to the ground.
Some bystanders try to stop the car to no avail, and one approaches the woman to help her up.
