Redlands Art Association’s Redlands Cinema Classic foreign film series will offer four recently released films in its spring series, screened at Look Cinemas in Redlands.
The first is “Hilma,” a film from Sweden, in Swedish with English subtitles, to be screened 7 p.m. April 12 and 2:30 p.m. April 13. The film is based on the life of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), whose abstract paintings remained unknown for decades, according to a news release.
Oscar nominee Lasse Hallström wrote and directed the film, which features Hallström’s daughter Tora Hallström as the young Hilma and his wife, Oscar nominee Lena Olin, as an older Hilma.
Next in the series is “Róise & Frank,” a film from Ireland in Scottish Gaelic with English subtitles, with screenings scheduled 7 p.m. April 26 and 2:30 p.m. April 27. In the film, recently widowed Róise meets a dog who follows her home and makes himself comfortable in spite of her efforts to get rid of him. She becomes convinced he is the reincarnation of her late husband, Frank, an Irish hurling player.
Third on the series is “The Blue Caftan,” a film from Morocco in Arabic with English subtitles, to be screened 7 p.m. May 10 and 2:30 p.m. May 11. In the film, directed by Maryam Touzani, Halim and his wife, Mina, run a caftan store in Morocco. They hire a young apprentice, Youssef, and as Mina deals with a progressing illness, she becomes uncomfortable with Youssef’s presence as they depend on his help.
The final film is “The Forger,” a film from Germany in German with English subtitles, to be screened 7 p.m. May 24 and 2:30 p.m. May 25. The film, directed by Maggie Peren, is based on the true story of a young Jewish man living in Berlin in 1942. He adopts the identity of a Nazi marine officer to escape being deported as his family was and, drawing on his art school background, he joins a network of underground rescuers and becomes known for his forged IDs that helped hundreds of Jews to leave the country.
Tickets for each screening are $15 for adults and $10 for students with ID, available at the Redlands Art Association Gallery, 215 E. State St., and before each show at Look Cinemas, 340 N. Eureka St.
Proceeds benefit art education grants in Redlands via Redlands Art Association’s Margaret Clark Art Education Enrichment Fund.
