Here’s Redlands Art Association’s featured artist for May 14-June 3 – San Bernardino Sun

Joan Marie Smith will be one of the featured artists at the Redlands Art Association Gallery May 14-June 3.

Her exhibit of watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings will begin with an open house at the gallery 1-5 p.m. May 14.

Smith grew up in Manila, Philippines, where she attended an American school and where her high school art teacher, Ruth Geoffey, introduced her to a variety of art mediums including pastels, according to her artist’s biography.

After high school, she attended Hope College in Michigan, preparing for a teaching career. She also continued her art study with an independent study class in her senior year.

Following graduation, she married, moved to California and began teaching. The next time she had a chance to paint was when her children were toddlers and she took an oil painting class at San Bernardino Valley College.

As her children entered school, Smith went back to teaching and received a master’s degree and reading specialist credential. After 30 years with the Colton Joint Unified School District, she retired from full-time teaching and found time for painting again.

She took a watercolor class at the Redlands Art Association, then began painting with a group at a church in Redlands and joined a group at the Loma Linda Senior Center. She now paints at the Redlands Art Association in Martha Cowen’s advanced oil painting class.

She is a member of the Redlands Art Association and the Loma Linda Art Association, of which she is a board member. She shows her work regularly and has sold numerous paintings.

The Redlands Art Association Gallery is at 215 E. State St. For information, go to redlands-art.org or call the gallery at 909-792-8435.
