A man who led Hemet police on a pursuit in a reported stolen car was shot and wounded by an officer on Thursday night, Feb. 10, the Hemet Police Department said.
A police news release did not say what prompted the officer, a seven-year law enforcement veteran, to fire. The 53-year-old driver was shot in the hip and expected to survive, police said.
An officer began following the 2014 Dodge Dart near Devonshire Avenue and Kirby Street at about 8:30 a.m. after determining that it was stolen. The driver then accelerated and ran stop signs, reaching 75 mph, police said.
“The driver, along with his adult male passenger, ultimately led officers through a mobile home park in the 1000 block of North State Street, where he ran out of roadway and stopped the car adjacent to a large field. An officer-involved shooting took place at the termination point of the pursuit,” the release said.
The 36-year-old passenger was also arrested. The release did not say why.
A message was left with Hemet police seeking additional details.
Per policy, the Riverside County Force Investigation Detail and Hemet police are investigating the officer’s actions.
