Helen Tran leads race for San Bernardino mayor, early results show – San Bernardino Sun

San Bernardino mayoral candidate Helen Tran has dashed out to a large early lead in the race for the city’s top elected post, according to the first results posted by the county Registrar of Voters Tuesday, June 7.

Mayor John Valdivia and Jim Penman trail Tran.

Treasure Ortiz, Henry Nickel, Gabriel Jaramillo and Mohammad Khan, in that order, round out the list of mayoral candidates.

Updated results are expected to be released late Tuesday.

Valdivia is vying for a second term in office after capturing the post as a challenger four years ago.

He is one of five candidates this summer with ties to City Hall.

Nickel is a former City Council member, Ortiz a former council candidate and city employee, Penman the former elected and recalled city attorney, and Tran, the former human resources director.

Jaramillo and Khan, meanwhile, are political newcomers.

Those challenging Valdivia in the primary have vowed to change the culture at City Hall.

Valdivia was censured by his colleagues on the City Council late last year for spending public funds for personal gain, and is being sued by multiple former city employees who allege he sexually harassed them.

Valdivia has denied any wrongdoing.
