Gunfire left a 7-Eleven clerk dead in Brea, another person dead in Santa Ana, and three others injured at chain locations in La Habra and Riverside early Monday, July 11, authorities said.
In Santa Ana, at about 3:25 a.m., a man was fatally shot at a 7-Eleven in the 300 block of East 17th Street during an attempted robbery, Sgt. Maria Lopez said. Police found him in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the upper body.
“We don’t believe he was an employee (at the 7-Eleven),” she said.
Within the hour, the Brea shooting occurred at the 7-Eleven northwest of Brea Boulevard and Lambert Road, said Brea police, describing it as a robbery that turned into a homicide.
“When officers arrived, they found a male clerk, with a gunshot wound who was pronounced deceased by (the) Brea Fire (Department),” police said.
Brea police said they didn’t know yet if the shootings in Santa Ana and Riverside were related to the ones in Brea and La Habra, but the gunfire in those neighboring cities involved the same suspect or suspect.
“We are 100% confident,” Capt. Phil Rodriguez said.
At about 4:55 a.m., La Habra police responded to a robbery at a 7-Eleven at 381 E. Whittier Blvd., La Habra Sgt. Eric Roy said.
Officers found two victims with gunshot wounds who were taken to a hospital by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. Both were expected to survive, Roy said.
In Riverside, the shooting happened at about 1:50 a.m. at the 7-Eleven at 5102 La Sierra Ave. A man brandished a gun at the clerk and robbed the store, said Officer Ryan Railsback, a Police Department spokesman.
Before the suspect fled on foot, he shot a customer, Railsback said, leaving that victim in grave condition.
