Friends of A.K. Smiley Public Library plan two Feb. 5 book sales – San Bernardino Sun

The Friends of A.K. Smiley Public Library will hold two book sales Saturday, Feb. 5, the monthly bag sale and a sale outside the Lincoln Memorial Shrine, in conjunction with the shrine’s open house.

The bag sale is 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Friends of the Library bookstore on the lower level of the A.K. Smiley Public Library, 125 W. Vine St. Friends of the Library members pay $5 to fill a bag with books, and non-members pay $8. The sale begins with a members-only hour, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Memberships are available at the sale, costing $10 for an individual or $25 for a family membership.

Redlands’ Lincoln Memorial Shrine, celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, is in Smiley Park directly south of the library. The shrine’s annual open house is scheduled noon-4 p.m. Feb. 5, with activities in the park.

Friends of the A.K. Smiley Public Library will join the open house with a collection of books about the Civil War, President Lincoln and American history for sale outside the shrine 11:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

“Our sales events are made possible by the generous donations of the community,” Rebecca McCurdy, president of the Friends of the Library, said in a news release. “Proceeds from the sales and our bookstore enable the Friends to help fund new books and programs like the Summer Reading Program and Adult Literacy.”

The Friends of A.K. Smiley Public Library was formed in 1973 to support Redlands’ A.K. Smiley Public Library. Annual dues are used to purchase new books and digital material for the library collection and to fund children’s programming, infrastructure upgrades and heritage programs.
