In his keynote address to Chaffey College’s Class of 2022, former Laker and NBA champion Metta Sandiford-Artest urged graduates to learn from his journey.
“When I got what I wanted, I wasn’t ready for it,” Sandiford-Artest, formerly known as Metta World Peace, told the crowd at Chaffey’s 105th commencement ceremony, held May 19 at at Toyota Arena in Ontario. Talking about his transition from high school basketball player to NBA all-star, Sandiford-Artest shared his message of resiliency and asked graduates to consider how they’ll face challenges in their life.
“You’re right where you want to be,” Sandiford-Artest said. “But there’s going to be obstacles, some adversity along the way.”
His advice to graduates: “Always keep the family first, don’t forget who you are, always have some sustenance, something that you can fall back on” to help re-energize them as they pursue their dreams.
Chaffey awarded 4,600 degrees and certificates to 2,600 students at the ceremony, the first in-person commencement in three years due to coronavirus precautions earlier in the pandemic.
“We are so proud of our graduates because they have reached this milestone in their lives despite facing ongoing challenges of the pandemic,” Chaffey College Superintendent/President Henry Shannon said in a news release.
