Fontana’s library hosts winning peace posters | News

For 34 years, Lions Club International has coordinated a Peace Poster Contest, encouraging children to express their visions of peace and inspire the world through art and creativity.

This year, the winning posters are being displayed at the Lewis Library and Technology Center in Fontana, marking the first time ever that the art can be seen in a public building.

Several dignitaries, including California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, gathered at the library on Feb. 3 to celebrate the unveiling. Ma said she was honored to attend the event.

“I was struck by the creativity and talent of the artists for their posters that conveyed messages of peace, diversity, compassion, and appreciation for the unsung heroes on the frontlines of this pandemic,” Ma said.

The posters created by the grand prize winners are, appropriately, on the wall opposite the statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who promoted peace and nonviolence.

The exhibition will remain a permanent installation in the Children’s Library section of the Lewis Library. New artwork will be rotated each year as new grand prize winners are announced.

Michael Chan, centennial charter president of the Silicon Valley Cyber Lions Club, was on hand to help unveil the seven colorful posters and to discuss the importance of promoting peace.

“We need peace now more than ever,” Chan said.

Lions clubs from all over the world have come together to host this contest, attracting posters from more than 600,000 children of all ages.

“This event is a wonderful way for our youth to demonstrate their compassion and creativity about people, religions, and cultures,” said Mayor Acquanetta Warren. “Our goal is to inspire our youth through art and help promote peace in the world.”

Representatives from the offices of Assemblymember Eloise Reyes Gomez and Congresswoman Norma Torres attended the event, in addition to Fontana City Councilmember John Roberts and City Treasurer Janet Koehler-Brooks.
