Fontana police shoot Riverside man they say fired at officer – San Bernardino Sun

Fontana police officers shot a man after he allegedly opened fire during a pursuit Friday night.

Officers were called to a gas station in the 11000 block of Sierra Avenue around 10:20 p.m. for a reported shooting, police said. The suspected shooter was last seen running into the neighborhood south of Jurupa and east of Sierra avenues, and a perimeter was established while police combed the area.

About an hour later, an officer saw a suspect that matched the shooter’s description take off running south of the neighborhood onto Sierra Avenue and ordered the person to stop.

The suspect fired multiple shots at the officer, who returned fire and struck the man in his hand, police said. Paul Valenzuela, 37, of Riverside was arrested and taken to a hospital.

Valenzuela was found to be on parole for drug possession and is a documented gang member, according to police

No residents or officers were injured in the shooting.

The shooting is being reviewed by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the California Department of Justice.
