Five Etiwanda football players are named to All-CIF team | Sports

Last fall, the Etiwanda High School football team won the Baseline League championship and compiled a 12-1 record, and now the individual honors for the players are continuing to roll in.

Last week, five Eagles were named to the All-CIF team for their outstanding contributions during the 2021 season.

The five seniors are DeJon Roney (lineman), Antonio Gallardo (lineman), Saipeti Maiava (skill position), Jordan Williams (skill position), and Norion Espadron (skill position).

Coach Nick Baiz attributed most of the team’s accomplishments to the outstanding senior class.

“We had a lot of three-year starters,” Baiz said. “We owe a lot to them. I’m proud of those kids and their success, and hopefully that builds this program for the future.”

Also last week, two other seniors — quarterback Zach Congalton and offensive tackle Samuel Archie — received scholarships to play at Eastern New Mexico University.

Both of them did not play much as freshmen or sophomores, but they stepped up and made a big difference in their final two seasons.

“I’m excited for those two guys,” Baiz said. “They started every snap in their junior and senior years, and we went 16-1 during that time. They’re winners, they’re excellent students, and they’re excellent leaders on campus.”

Baez said he expects some additional seniors to receive scholarships in the upcoming weeks.
