Eastbound 91 Freeway to close in Corona this weekend – San Bernardino Sun

Headed to the beach this weekend? If you plan to drive the 91 Freeway to Orange County, you may want to make other plans for your return trip to the Inland Empire.

Ditto if you live in Orange County and are looking to visit a friend or family member in Riverside County.

Here’s why: A roughly mile-long section of the eastbound 91 will be shut down in Corona, between Main Street and the 15 Freeway, all weekend for a pavement replacement project, a news release states.

All eastbound general-purpose lanes, plus the eastbound 91 Express Lanes and the eastbound on-ramp at Main Street, are set to close at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. They won’t reopen until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29.

The interchange where the 91 and 15 freeways meet will remain open, said Aaron Hake, deputy executive director for the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

The all-weekend closure will allow work crews to pave that section of the 91 “all at once,” he said.

The work is part of a project between the commission and Caltrans to repave lanes and repair sound walls and concrete barriers along parts of the eastbound and westbound 91 in Corona, between Lincoln Avenue and the 15.

“That whole area has a history of settling,” Hake said, largely because the Temescal Wash passes under that stretch of the highway.

Construction will continue along the 91 in that area through the rest of summer and fall, he said, adding that more weekend closures are coming.

Drivers are urged to avoid traveling east on the 91 through Corona this weekend, and to use the 60, 71, 57, 15 or 215 freeways to steer clear of the area and avoid being caught up in long traffic backups.
