Diversity, equity and inclusion will be topic of Redlands AAUW program – San Bernardino Sun

Sandra Portocarrero will speak on “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Organizations” when the Redlands branch of American Association of University Women meets April 2 in the Casa Loma Room on the University of Redlands campus.

Portocarrero’s talk at 10:15 a.m. is free and open to the public.

The talk is preceded by social time at 9 a.m. and brunch at 9:30 a.m. for AAUW members and their guests. Those having brunch should register by March 26 by emailing rsvpmeeting@aauw-redlands-ca.org or calling 909-362-4955. After March 26, brunch reservations will be made on a space-available basis.

Portocarrero is a recipient of the American Association of University Women’s American Fellowship Award for 2021-22 and is completing her doctoral degree at Columbia University. She is an organizational and cultural sociologist who studies how diversity, equity and inclusion programs work in addressing inequality in settings such as a large pubic university, an elite college and the U.S. State Department.

Her research methods involve extensive participant observation, depth interviewing and analysis of narratives to develop an understanding of how people engage in and respond to diversity, equity and inclusion programs and expertise, according to a news release.

Portocarrero studied sociology at UC Berkeley before receiving master’s degrees from Columbia University.
