Deputy injured during vehicle search in Rancho Cucamonga; armed suspect shot – San Bernardino Sun

A deputy conducting a vehicle search in Rancho Cucamonga was injured Saturday night when a car struck the vehicle being searched; and the driver of the car was then shot by a deputy or deputies after approaching the first deputy with a knife, officials said.

Around 7 p.m., a car struck a vehicle being searched at Foothill Boulevard and Rochester Avenue, said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department  spokesperson Mara Rodriguez. The car “pinned” a single deputy, leading to one or more deputies opening fire on the driver, a man.

The man officials called a suspect, whose identity was not immediately made public, was shot and transported to the hospital.

The deputy was also hospitalized for leg injuries sustained when he was pinned by the car, Rodriguez added.

Information on the conditions of both men was not immediately released Saturday evening.

It was not immediately clear whether the car’s driver was connected to the vehicle under search. Information on the circumstances surrounding the original vehicle search was  also not immediately released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
