Darren Goodman has been tapped to lead the San Bernardino Police Department, city officials announced Friday, April 1, making him the first Black police chief in city history.
Goodman, who four years ago became Upland’s first Black police chief, will lead a department in San Bernardino with 262 sworn officers and 150 civilian staff.
He has 31 years in law enforcement, including 27 with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Goodman also is an adjunct professor at Cal State San Bernardino.
In social media posts Friday, San Bernardino City Council members Kimberly Calvin and Ben Reynoso welcomed the new chief.

“San Bernardino!!! We are excited to present to you our new and very first African American Police Chief, Chief Darren Goodman!” Calvin wrote in a post on Facebook. “Chief Goodman comes with a stellar resume and career in law enforcement. We are expecting GREAT growth to happen within our San Bernardino Police Department. Welcome Chief Darren Goodman!”
San Bernardino has been without a permanent police chief for nearly four years.
Former top cop Jarrod Burguan, who coordinated the police response to the 2015 terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center, retired in August 2019 after 27 years with the department – the final six as chief.
Eric McBride served as acting chief for most of 2019 as Burguan recovered from knee replacement surgery, and McBride continued in that role until his own retirement in August 2021.
David Green has led the department on an interim basis the past eight months.
