Attorneys await psychiatrist’s report in Corona movie theater shooting case – San Bernardino Sun

The court hearing to discuss doctors’ reports on the man accused of shooting two teenagers to death at a Corona movie theater in 2021 was postponed on Friday, April 15, to June 7.

One doctor’s report has not been received, defense attorney Charles Kenyon told Superior Court Judge Gail A. O’Rane at the Riverside County Hall of Justice in Riverside. Both the defense and Riverside County District Attorney’s Office hired psychiatrists to examine Joseph Jimenez Jr.

Jimenez, 21, has pleaded not guilty, and not guilty by reason of insanity, to two counts of murder. The two pleas were necessary because there would be two phases if the case goes to trial: a guilt phase and a phase to determine whether Jimenez was insane when the shootings happened.

Jimenez, in a jailhouse interview with a Southern California News Group reporter, said he is schizophrenic but was off his medication when “voices” told him to kill the only two other people in the Regal Edwards cinema on July 26: Corona residents Rylee Goodrich, 18, and Anthony Barajas, 19. He said in the interview that he was remorseful.

Jimenez, a Santiago High graduate, was in the theater with three other friends who fled when they saw that Jimenez had left the theater and returned with a gun. They didn’t alert anyone to the threat.

Barajas was a 2019 graduate of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, where he was an honor student, a soccer star and had lead roles in school plays. He had hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok. Family members attended Friday’s hearing.

Goodrich, a graduate of Corona High School’s STEM Academy in June 2020, was enrolled at Grand Canyon University in Arizona.

A special-circumstance allegation of multiple murders makes Jimenez eligible for the death penalty if convicted as charged. District Attorney Mike Hestrin has not announced whether he plans to seek capital punishment.
