Abandoned Carousel Mall in San Bernardino catches fire again – San Bernardino Sun

The shuttered Carousel Mall on 2nd Street in San Bernardino suffered at least its second three-alarm blaze this year when it caught fire Sunday, Sept. 11.

The fire was reported at 10:14 a.m. Firefighters knocked down the flames within the hour, said Eric Sherwin, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

Each “alarm” would typically dispatch an additional three fire engines and a supervisor.

The cause of the fire was not announced.

But the mall, abandoned since it closed five years ago, has been infiltrated by transients who set warming or cooking fires that sometimes get out of control. The inside has been severely damaged by trespassers. The City Council voted in July to rush a plan already in place to demolish the mall, which greets visitors heading downtown when they take the 2nd Street exit off the 215 Freeway.

The city in July also hired a security firm to patrol the 43-acre mall property at a cost of $40,000 per month.
