5 Inland Empire schools named National Blue Ribbon Schools – San Bernardino Sun

Five Inland Empire schools have been chosen as 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The U.S. Department of Education award recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools with either high overall academic performance or where major gains have been made in closing achievement gaps between groups of students. Student scores and graduation rates are used to measure student success.

The Inland Empire schools chosen this year are:

  • Diamond Bar High School, Walnut Valley Unified
  • Grapeland Elementary School, Etiwanda Elementary School District
  • John L. Golden Elementary School, Etiwanda Elementary School District
  • Richardson PREP HI Middle School, San Bernardino City Unified
  • Arma J. Shull Elementary School, Bonita Unified

“I am so proud to serve and be part of Richardson’s legacy of success for students, staff, and the school as a whole,” Richardson Principal Jenny Vetere is quoted as saying in a news release issued by San Bernardino City Unified. “Our Tiger teachers and staff work so hard each and every day to support and grow our students.”

In all, 29 California schools were chosen, including 10 in Los Angeles County and one in Orange County.

“As we continue to recover from the pandemic, this award validates the hard work of educators across the state on behalf of our students,” state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond was quoted as saying in a news release announcing the selections on Friday, Sept. 16. “Their commitment to meeting the academic, social and emotional needs of all their students has helped transform the lives of students during extraordinary circumstances.”

This is the 39th time the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has given out awards. In all, the program has bestowed about 10,000 to more than 9,000 schools nationwide.

Public schools are nominated by top state education officials, the Department of Defense and the Bureau of Indian Education. Private schools are nominated by the Council for American Private Education.
