30 motorists reportedly caught in mudslide near Big Bear – San Bernardino Sun

A mudslide reported along Highway 38 near Big Bear left an estimated 30 motorists stuck in their vehicles on Sunday, July 31.

It was not immediately clear exactly how many people were waiting to be rescued after mud and debris swept over a portion of the highway between Paradise Way and Maple Lane at about 12 p.m., California Highway Patrol dispatchers said, though there were witness reports of some 30 cars.

Crews flying San Bernardino County Sheriff’s helicopters were working to get them out of there as of 1 p.m.

Also, Highway 38 was closed in both directions from Jenks Lake Rd to Valley of the Falls Drive due to flooding. Drivers were advised to wait until the storm passes or take a different route.

On Friday, the National Weather Service reported scattered thunderstorms, prompting flash flood warnings along Highway 38. Those were scheduled to remain in effect until Sunday evening.
